Position Summary
The Substitute Teacher provides short-term classroom coverage across Early Years and Elementary when teachers or teaching assistants are absent. They supervise students, deliver teacher-prepared lesson plans, maintain a safe and positive learning environment, and communicate timely, clear feedback to the regular teacher and school leadership. This role may also cover After-School Activities (ASA) or other duties when the absent staff member is scheduled for them. The Substitute Teacher reports to the EY/Elementary Principal.Key Responsibilities:Instruction & Classroom ManagementDeliver lesson plans and learning activities prepared by the classroom teacher; adapt as needed to meet student needs while maintaining lesson objectives.Maintain a safe, orderly, and inclusive classroom aligned with school behavior expectations.Provide appropriate differentiation and support for diverse learners, including EAL and students with additional needs, following provided accommodations.Use positive behavior strategies and de-escalation techniques; follow school discipline and referral procedures.
Take accurate attendance and ensure timely transitions to/from classes, specials, lunch, and dismissal.Student Wellbeing & SafeguardingUphold child protection, safeguarding, and health & safety policies at all times; report concerns immediately according to school procedures.
Supervise students during non-instructional times (recess, lunch, transitions, arrival/dismissal) as assigned.ASA / Duty CoverageCover ASA sessions, clubs, or other after-school duties when the absent staff member is scheduled, ensuring proper supervision and activity continuity.Collaboration & CommunicationCommunicate clearly with the regular teacher (and/or grade-level lead) about lesson coverage, student progress, and any issues encountered.Leave concise end-of-day notes including what was taught, student engagement, unfinished work, behavior incidents, and materials used/needed.Coordinate with teaching assistants, specialist teachers, and support staff to ensure continuity of routines and individual student plans.AdministrationFollow school schedules, classroom routines, and emergency procedures (fire/lockdown/medical).Protect student data and confidentiality; handle student work and records per school policy.Collect and return materials, devices, and classroom keys; leave the classroom tidy.Professional ConductModel professionalism, punctuality, reliability, and positive, child-centered language.Use school-approved platforms (e.g., LMS, attendance, email) as directed.Participate in required orientations or briefings for substitutes; complete mandatory training (e.g., safeguarding, first aid, behavior management).FlexibilityBe available on short notice; adapt to a variety of grade levels (Early Years–Grade 5/6) and subjects.Assume other reasonable duties as assigned by the Assistant Principal or Principal of Elementary.Qualifications & ExperienceBachelor’s degree (Education or related field preferred); teaching credential/certificate advantageous.Prior experience working with Early Years and/or Elementary students (school, childcare, tutoring, or similar).Strong English proficiency (spoken and written); additional languages a plus.Familiarity with inquiry-based and play-based learning (Early Years) and balanced literacy/numeracy approaches (Elementary).Basic competence with classroom technology (projector/interactive display, Google/Microsoft tools, LMS).Key CompetenciesClassroom management & positive behavior supportClear, professional communication and documentationAdaptability and problem-solving under time constraintsCollaboration and respect for diverse learners and staffReliability, integrity, and discretion with student informationReporting LineReports to: Assistant Principal (Primary/Elementary) and Principal of ElementaryAvailability & Work ConditionsFull time roleMay be assigned across Early Years and Elementary grade levels, including specials and support classes.ASA/duty coverage as required by the absent staff member’s schedule.Safeguarding & ComplianceEmployment is subject to background checks, reference checks, verification of credentials, and completion of mandatory safeguarding training. All staff share responsibility for student welfare and must follow school safeguarding procedures.Our requirements:
  • Higher Degree Diploma
  • At least 3 years of teaching experience, preferably in international schools;
  • Fluency in English
